Meet our upcyclers

  • A smiling woman with glasses working in a paint or hardware workshop. She is wearing a green safety vest, black shirt, and black pants. She is holding a paintbrush in one hand and is standing at a wooden workbench with various painting supplies and tools. Behind her, there is a pegboard with hooks holding various tools and a face mask. To her left, there is a metal shelf filled with cans of paint and other supplies.

    Wai-o-Taiki Furniture Redesign

Wendy from Wai-o-Taki Furniture Redesign transforms unwanted furniture into bespoke, upcycled treasures. She specialises in hand-selected, quality vintage furniture redesigns and sustainable remodeling — giving each piece of furniture a fresh purpose and a beautiful second chance. Wendy works out of our Tāmaki Zero Waste Hub, where she also runs workshops.

  • A man in an orange safety vest working on a chrome motorcycle frame in a workshop.

    Octalien

Artist Sean Boyd of Octalien creates sculptures of sci-fi objects such as ray guns using trash metal and appliances rescued from Auckland Council’s Inorganic Collection Service. Sean usually has several sci-fi themed artworks on the go and has sold his sculptures worldwide. His work is fun and playful but also social commentary on the amount of waste sent to landfills.

  • A woman in a pink hoodie and a yellow safety vest is standing next to a vintage couch indoors. She is smiling and resting her hand on a sign that says 'R, THE RESTYLIST.' The background shows a warehouse-like setting with shelves and various items.

    The Restylist

Sam Noon is a furniture restylist, specialising in upholstery and the restoration of Mid Century design, with a studio space and workshop at the Tāmaki Zero Waste Hub. Sam has a passion for breathing new life into timeless pieces of furniture, using techniques such as chalk painting, which she teaches in workshops alongside Wendy from Wai-o-Taki Furniture Redesign.

  • A smiling man wearing a yellow safety vest and red cap standing beside a cargo bike with two additional bicycles loaded in the wooden compartment.

    Ecomatters Bike Hub

We’re proud to partner with Ecomatters who restore bikes rescued from the Auckland Inorganic Collection service and make these available to the community at low or zero cost through their bike hubs. For more information, including where to find your nearest bike hub, visit the Ecomatters site.

  • Group of volunteers in a warehouse making thermal blankets out of chip packets, some wearing yellow safety vests, working at tables with food and supplies.

    The Chip Packet Project

The wonderful volunteers of the Chip Packet Project meet up every Friday at the Tāmaki Zero Waste Hub to make thermal blankets out of humble chippie packets. These blankets are given free to Kiwis living on the streets, in garages, or in cars, or anyone in the community who needs a warm night’s sleep.

  • A man with tattoos wearing a high-visibility vest and gloves is working on a lawnmower with a cordless drill beside it, set against a brick wall and a workbench with various tools.

    Resource Rescue

Resource Rescue refurbishes appliances, including whiteware and lawnmowers, that are rescued from the Auckland Council Inorganics Collection Service or dropped off at our recycling yard, and these are donated back to the community or sold at low cost through our ReUse Store.
